I was on Digg.com today and saw a story on the front page about OLED’s. So that took me to Techeblog.com where I saw this cool video of a flexible OLED. The OLED on display here is made by Universal Dispay Corporation (Nasdaq: PANL).

I bought Universal Display (PANL) late last year in the $9’s and then sold it in the $13’s earlier this year. Since then, I have put the stock on the backburner but watching this video has got me excited again. The stock is currently trading at $11.20 but it seems like it might go lower.

The future is still pretty far away but the market could be huge. The market for OLED and paper like displays will reach $10.2 billion by 2011 according to research firm NanoMarkets. It further expects this market to grow to $14.7 billion by 2013.

The stock is extensively covered by Motely Fool and is a Motley Fool Rule Breakers pick.

After the post Q2 earnings run iRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT) is back to its old ways and continues to drift lower. By the way something similar happened last quarter as well. I like the company and the robotics field but this stock has been in the dog house too long. I am not sure what the bottom is but it seems like iRobot needs to let us in on some of its future offerings to maybe jump start this stock again.

iRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT) needed this in the worst way. The company reported its second quarter earnings after market close today and beat estimates while also raising guidance. iRobot was seeing daily 52-week lows for a quite a while now and this couldn’t have happened at a better time. The stock was up close to 7% in after-hours trading adding to its about 6% gain during the day. iRobot has been beaten up so bad that any decent news would have moved the stock up.

Note that the same thing happened after last quarter’s earnings were released and obviously iRobot couldn’t sustain the momentum. I am not sure if the same thing happens again but according to thorn_stevens there is a lot of upside here.

I would have analyzed this further but instead I am going to point everyone to Robotstocknews.blogspot.com, where thorn_stevens does a great job of tracking iRobot.

Here’s the direct link to the post on the 2nd quarter earnings:

The recent sell-off has made the two Wimax stocks attractive at their current valuations. The more you read about Wimax the more the question shifts from ‘if’ to ‘when’ Wimax will become reality. However, both companies mentioned below are still not profitable and might not be for a while. However, here’s a good chance to get into an emerging technology stock before the technology goes mainstream.

The two companies that will benefit the most with the upcoming Wimax revolution are:

1. Alvarion Ltd. (NASDAQ: ALVR) – Is the best of breed in Wimax and has partnerships with big names like Intel and IBM. The stock is near its 52-week low and is worth picking up if the weakness continues. Also, an acquisition play for big players who don’t have a strong Wimax portfolio such as Cisco.

2. Airspan Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRN) – A more of a pure play Wimax pick. The downtrend started with a higher than expected loss last quarter which was attributed to $5.5 million revenue deferral from Yozan Inc., a primary customer for its WiMAX deployment in Japan. Also, one of its Directors, Matthew Desch, bought 4900 shares on 5/19/2006 for an average price of $5.613. Just like Alvarion, I think the size of this company makes it a acquisition play as well.

Full Disclosure: I own stocks of Alvarion and Airspan.

NanoMarkets foresees that decreasing cost to manufacture OLED and paper displays combined with increased production capacity will transform the signage and advertising industries, enabling retailers to constantly update things like shelf-edge displays. OLED technology will also soon have the resolution and color capability to enter the television and video market; NanoMarkets believes OLED televisions will account for $2.2 billion in revenue in 2011 and begin seriously cutting into the LCD television market.
iRobot Corporation continues to slide and is now approaching its IPO price of $24. The stock is sitting at its 52 -week low of $24.58 and is showing no signs of life. The recent slide seems to be due to the price drop of Scooba floor washing robot which was supposed to have higher margins than Roomba at $399.99. It would indicate that the price drop is due to sales not meeting expectations.

Furthermore, the lockout period ends on 5/8/2006 which could put further pressure on the stock. iRobot needs to come up with a nice earnings report for this quarter to get the stock moving up again. So far things are not looking so good for the robotics company.
