OLED and ‘Paper-like’ display market to grow to $10.2 billion dollar market
DigitalTrends: The market for OLED and paper like displays will reach $10.2 billion by 2011 according to research firm NanoMarkets. It further expects this market to grow to $14.7 billion by 2013.
NanoMarkets foresees that decreasing cost to manufacture OLED and paper displays combined with increased production capacity will transform the signage and advertising industries, enabling retailers to constantly update things like shelf-edge displays. OLED technology will also soon have the resolution and color capability to enter the television and video market; NanoMarkets believes OLED televisions will account for $2.2 billion in revenue in 2011 and begin seriously cutting into the LCD television market. Other key markets for OLED and paper-like displays include mobile computing and consumer electronics devices.
Two stocks to lookout for in the OLED field are:
- Cambridge Display technology (NASDAQ: OLED)
- Universal Dispaly Corporation (NASDAQ: PANL)

We are starting to see this technology emerge in cell phones and gadgets that have smaller displays. I need to do more research into OLED’s.

OLED and PANL are in different camps. While OLED’s IP is polymer based PANL’s is small molecule based. Small molecules are already in production in several secondary cell phonje displays. Small molecules come in two flavors : Flourescent (patents expiring 2007) and Phosphorescent (IP till 2017+) PANL specifically brings the more energy efficient Phosphorescent chemicals. IMHO flourescents will rule cheap displays and Phosphors will be chosen in energy conscious apps. Samsung is expected to be rolling out mixed P+F next year as primary display for cell phones. There is no P-Blue that is commercially viable as lifetime stability has not yet been reached by PANL on blues. Meanwhile CDT seems to be blowing a lot of hot air. Do not forsee any commercially successful polymer OLED products in the next 3-4 years. For not Advantage PANL!

Last sentence meant : For NOW advantage PANL!
